June is Beach Rose Month in Provincetown

May 9, 2016 By FoxberryInn

We’re just weeks away from the beach roses blooming!

Rosa rugosa is the official name of what many call beach roses and salt spray roses. They bloom in pink and white in Cape Cod National Seashore.

Legend has it that the plant came on shore during a shipwreck hundreds of years ago. It’s also possible it came to Cape Cod in less exciting ways, such as the seeds may have been distributed by birds.

No matter how the roses got to Provincetown and Cape Cod, they thrive here in our sandy dunes and salty air. They are all over not only Cape Cod National Seashore, but throughout Provincetown.

Come visit Cape Cod in June, the best time to see the beach roses in bloom. The Foxberry Inn is perfectly situated near Herring Cove beach. The photos below were taken at Herring Cove. You can take a beautiful walk through the seashore and enjoy the beach roses.

Wake up to our expanded Continental breakfast. Stroll through Cape Cod National Seashore and smell the wonderful scent of the beach roses. If you’re a photographer, bring your camera! Spend the afternoon shopping on Commercial Street, taking a Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, visit the outer dunes with Art’s Dune Tours, and cap off a perfect Provincetown day with dinner at Fanizzi’s by the Sea.

Right Whales Return to Cape Cod Bay

February 29, 2016 By FoxberryInn

right whale

We are so lucky. We know it, and we don’t take it for granted.

Every spring, North Atlantic Right Whales migrate past Provincetown. They must like it here because not only do they come back every year, but they also hang out a while, too.

The Boston Globe quote Provincetown’s Center for Coastal Studies:

North Atlantic right whales are one of the most endangered ocean species. Only 526 are alive in the world, according to the Center for Coastal Studies.

“They are a lot rarer than tigers, and elephants, and other big-time animals. I think it’s an important thing to note every time this happens,” said Mayo. “Everyone who lives along the coastline is dealing with a nearly-extinct species. It’s a last-of-the-dinosaurs kind of thing.”

The Foxberry Inn is located directly around the corner from Herring Cove Beach. Land-loving whale watchers park in the Herring Cove parking lot to watch for these beautiful, rare creatures. They often swim so close, that you can hear them exhaling, forcing a V – shaped water spout far above the water line. Sometimes you’ll get so lucky as to hear them trumpeting!

The Foxberry Inn will re-open May 1, 2016. Book your room now for whale watching right around the corner!
